Great Books for First Graders

First Grade readers are all over the place in terms of reading level.  That's why the library's suggested reading list for this grade is combined with kindergarten and includes books for grown-ups to read to kids, books for kids just starting to read, and books for kids who are reading a bit more independently.  Browse the reading lists below to find some great suggestions.  You can place holds right from the online list or ask a staff member if you need help finding anything!

Picture Books

Picture books use natural language and are often difficult for beginning readers to read on their own.  They are meant to be read aloud by an adult!  They help kids develop reading readiness skills and a love of reading & learning, and they give you the chance to snuggle up and read together from a young age!

Easy Readers

Easy Readers use controlled vocabulary, short sentence structure, repetition, and brief text to make stories accessible to children who are just beginning to read.

Beginning Chapter Books

Beginning Chapter Books are perfect for readers who are moving up from Easy Readers but aren't ready for longer, more complicated novels.  They still contain lots of pictures and a large font size.  There are many fun and engaging series so newly independent readers will find familiar characters and situations that help to provide context.  The depth of the plot and the longer story arc help prepare kids to tackle meatier chapter books in the coming years.
