A Security Monitor conducts surveillance of buildings, grounds and activities; ensures the security of the building; and enforces established rules and regulations. Security Monitors also assist with the planning and execution of library safety drills.
Two shifts available.
12 hours per week:
- Sundays 2:30pm – 5:30pm
- Mondays 6:30pm – 9:30pm
- Tuesdays 6:30pm – 9:30pm
- Wednesdays 6:30pm – 9:30pm
9 hours per week:
- Thursdays 6:30pm – 9:30pm
- Fridays 3:30pm – 6:30pm
- Saturdays 2:30pm – 5:30pm
This position requires a thorough knowledge of practices concerning the protection of buildings and grounds; the ability to recognize and identify activities or situations which have or may become a problem or an emergency situation, and the ability to think and act quickly during emergency situations. De-escalation skills and the ability to stand for long periods of time are a must. Daily tasks will include:
- Providing security for the building, personnel and customers, which includes protecting materials and documents against illegal acts or damage;
- Ensuring customers act according to the library’s Code of Conduct. Works to prevent disturbances and congregation of customers, destruction of property and improper use of materials and equipment;
- Patrolling the building’s public service points on foot every 20 minutes, when possible, in order to detect unauthorized activities;
- Conducting hourly exterior perimeter checks in order to detect unauthorized activities or facility problems;
- Providing security inside the building, at meetings, and at other events;
- Monitoring the library entrance area to keep it unobstructed;
- Confronting unauthorized and/or undesirable persons and following library procedures as required;
- Providing general information and directions to library users;
- Responding to complaints from customers and staff;
- Ensuring that noise levels are kept at a minimum;
- Assisting in locating lost family members, including the successful execution of MIssing Child/Person protocols;
- Assisting with the planning and execution of library safety drills, including fire drills, emergency evacuations, and active shooter preparedness training.
- Maintaining the proper location of furnishings to avoid blockage of traffic areas;
- Checking materials that set off theft detection devices;
- Watching for, correcting, and/or reporting building irregularities, such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes and security doors left unlocked.
- Preparing incident reports;
- At the request of the Director or designee, reviewing security camera footage after incidents to confirm witness accounts and prepare incident reports.
- Settting up meeting rooms for public use in the absence of a custodial helper.
A Security Monitor must have any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. NJ Security Officer Certification required within six months of hire date. Ongoing professional development relating to security duties is required. Previous security experience preferred.
$25.00 per hour
